Building Physical Activity Self Efficacy

In psychology, self- efficacy is a term used to describe ‘an individual’s belief in their capacity to act in a way necessary to reach a specific goal.’

Outdoor recreational activities can be unfamiliar or difficult and can challenge our beliefs that we can accomplish them. As an example, a beginner surfer will fail repeatedly and this can lead to feeling of frustration. With continued practice, the feeling of success when the surfer begins to stand up and ride the wave is worth the frustration.

Other outdoor activities such as abseiling can challenge many people. Overcoming fears and the feeling of danger will occur by learning to trust those who are working with them. This can eventually lead to the participant achieving the goals.

Achieving goals and developing skills is an important art of outdoor education and can dramatically improve the self- efficacy of those involved.
