Care and Maintenance of Ropes

Ropes are essential for many different outdoor activities such as sailing, rock climbing or abseiling. It can be vital for not only performance but also safety that any ropes used be maintained and cared for.

Climbing ropes are extremely tough and designed to be used in rugged conditions. However, they can degrade over time, especially if they are not looked after. Some tips for maintenance include:

  • Keep ropes away from any chemicals. This can include items as simple as bug sprays. The ingredients in the sprays can degrade ropes made out of nylon.
  • Remove dust and grit from ropes. Even small amounts of dust can eventually abrade ropes.
  • Wash ropes on occasion. This can remove the ingrained dirt in the deeper parts of the rope.
  • Ensure ropes are dried properly. Ropes that do not dry can be damaged.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight when not in use.

Sailing ropes can suffer from exposure to sunlight and salt water. To ensure they remain effective, some basic precautions need to be taken. This includes:

  • Checking ropes before use for any damage
  • Seal rope ends after cutting. This can be done by burning the ends.
  • Washing and drying the ropes after use.
  • Avoid the use of chemicals when washing the ropes
  • Avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight when not in use.
