An important aim of many outdoor education programs is to build character traits such as resilience and persistence. By presenting challenges and controlled exposure to risks, the ability to learn ‘bounce back’ from failure and learn from mistakes is a valuable lesson.
In an emergency situation where the risks are very real and the consequences can be dire, these traits are needed. Again, a good leader will work with his group to manage the stress levels and anxiety of the group and enable them to recognise their abilities and skills. They can also work with those individuals who are struggling to overcome doubts and ensure that good decisions are made.
An emergency can highlight those individuals who are resilient and can work well under pressure. These are the group members who rise to the top in these circumstances, becoming leaders.
