A vital factor to consider in preparing for a safe outdoor education experience is communication. This is both ensuring external communication in order to remain in contact with others in case of emergency but also within the group to ensure a cohesive and enjoyable experience for all.
The group leader in any outdoor activity is the person most responsible for ensuring effective communication is developed. A culture of sharing, with everyone able to contribute to problem solving is important. Many outdoor experiences will present many problems and unfamiliar situations. The variety of skills that different individuals possess mean that as a group, many problems can be resolved.
Good communication is also essential to maintain safety. The chances of incidents occurring increase if individuals do not hear or choose to ignore the advice of safety briefings provided prior to undergoing any activity. There are many tools to allow communication with those outside the group. This can be vitally important in case of emergency, such as being lost or in conditions such as flash flooding or bushfires. In many areas, mobile reception is not available. Previously, satellite phones were an option for those going into remote areas to maintain contact. Now there are newer devices that incorporate GPS technology as well as basic forms of communication. This communication can provide search and rescue people essential information about the status of those who are lost and can help in minimising harm whilst waiting to be rescued.
